This training workshop is required for all BrainSTEPS team leaders. This bi-annual workshop aims to ensure that BrainSTEPS team leaders are equipped with the knowledge they need to oversee their regional Intermediate Unit BrainSTEPS teams. Team leaders will set goals for the coming school year (2023-24) based on current data for their individual teams that will be provided based on 2022-2023 school year team data. The new website applications will be reviewed. Kristin James, IU16 team leader will present on Cortical Visual Impairment & students with brain injury. Her overview will discuss the 10 behavioral and visual responses associated with CVI.

The Regional Team Liaisons will meet with their regional teams to brainstorm and share. Dr. Angela Ciccia will share the latest research updates from the CDC BrainSTEPS STATBI study. Johns Hopkins University, Department of Education, IDEALS Institute researchers will present their BrainSTEPS data on adult well-being and vocational/educational outcomes of BrainSTEPS students who graduated from high school. Team leaders will share strategies to increase awareness of their BrainSTEPS supports with their local schools and strategies to increase referrals for the coming year.

Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss new ways to engage community partners to increase referrals;
  • Use the BrainSTEPS Brain Injury Supports Framework independently and with more confidence;
  • Share at least 3 strategies that can be used to ensure referrals are being successfully managed in alignment with the state-recommended BrainSTEPS best practices;
  • Discuss research project updates and the importance of entering BrainSTEPS data on all students.
