While school teams supporting children with deaf-blindness may be familiar with some of the needs associated with CHARGE Syndrome, they do not always recognize the impact CHARGE has on the family. In order to best support their students, school teams must be able to identify the ways in which CHARGE extends throughout the family’s day to day life, as well as their role in mitigating some of these challenges by forming trusting relationships and productive partnerships with families. In this pre-session, Deaf-Blind Resource Team members will have the opportunity to learn more about CHARGE Syndrome, the impact CHARGE has on families and their experiences with the educational system, and implications for future DBRT technical assistance practices.

Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the major features of CHARGE and their educational implications.
  • Identify roadblocks to working with parents.
  • Describe the double bind that parents sometimes find themselves in.
  • List some ways to partner with parents.
