This presentation will focus on comprehension & fluency as major areas of explicit instruction in the teaching of reading in grades K-2. This training will provide in-depth knowledge and practice related to the science of reading in relation to the prevention of reading difficulties and intervention for students who may present with dyslexia. As a result of this staff development participants will demonstrate the necessary components to effectively participate in the Dyslexia Expansion Project.

The training provides details on the key components of comprehension and fluency in connected text in major areas of reading: oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary, as well as an emphasis on how to put the skills together in an integrated manner. Effective instructional routines will be shared and practiced to transfer knowledge into classroom practice.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define comprehension and fluency
  2. Identify text organizational structure
  3. List the components of high-quality discussion
