Middle school teachers often report that their students have adequately developed word reading skills but underdeveloped academic vocabulary, comprehension, and argumentation skills, resulting in low levels of student engagement with text and poor acquisition of background information. However, teachers also report that there is not uniformity with respect to the provision of high-quality vocabulary instruction and discourse across content areas. For English Learners and other diverse learners, including students with disabilities, this is a formidable challenge that often results in difficulties with language development, social-emotional, behavioral and academic engagement. Through participation in this series, content area teachers will acquire knowledge and the opportunity to implement effective practices designed to enhance engagement and literacy outcomes for all students, including students with diverse learning needs.
