Participants will learn how the gaps in vocabulary in middle school students, particularly for English language learners and low-income students, interfere with comprehension of content area texts and impact negatively on student engagement. Participants will be introduced to the Word Generation curriculum to include a review of lesson implementation and effective instructional strategies to increase academic language and discourse and improve overall behavior and social-emotional learning.

Objectives:

Participants will be able to….

  1. Demonstrate conceptual underpinnings of the word generation curriculum through case study examples
  2. Identify the most effective strategies for enhancing engagement and academic language outcomes
  3. Work collaboratively to identify team-based needs, implementation priorities, and potential obstacles
  4. List immediate action steps necessary for beginning adoption and fidelity of implementation
