This training is anchored in the theoretical model of Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope, specifically related to the language comprehension strands of the reading rope. Components of this training will include: background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge. Classroom application of the components will include: a case study, instructional routines, videos of practice, graphic organizers, anagram activities, word sums/matrixes, functional language systems by ear, eye, mouth, and hand. 

Participants will be able to:

  • List the strands of Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope
  • Explain how language comprehension relates to reading comprehension
  • Create a word sum/matrix
  • Demonstrate use of a sentence-builder chart
  • Analyze, select, and match graphic organizers as they relate to specific text structures
  • Determine instructional needs related to case study student
  • Demonstrate accuracy of instructional routines modeled
