This training will focus on the research evidence related to phonics instruction for primary students in grades Kindergarten through Second Grade. Participants will be instructed in how to successfully implement direct, explicit, and systematic phonics instruction into daily classroom practice. Specifically, instructional practices shared will support students’ consistent engagement with systematically teaching the sound-symbol structure of English orthography. Assessments related to phonics will also be offered.

Participants will be able to:

  • Define phonics and the alphabetic principle
  • List the scope and sequence of phonics skills from least complex to most complex
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the scope and sequence of phonics skill acquisition by matching a skill to an instructional practice
  • Demonstrate the sound-symbol correspondences of English orthography
  • Demonstrate understanding of multisensory practices by engaging students in a variety of avenues through which to learn phonics
  • List assessments (universal screeners, diagnostic, formative) that can be used to inform phonics instruction and intervention
