Foundations of Reading: Sound Walls
Session Dates
Thursday December 12, 2019 8:30 AM - 11:45 AM - PaTTAN - WEST

Beginning readers need to learn that letters represent the speech sounds of our language. One instructional tool to facilitate this understanding is a sound wall. A sound wall organizes words by place and manner of articulation of speech sounds. Organizing words by speech sounds helps early readers connect phonology and orthography.
This training provides the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to move from a word wall to a sound wall, grounding the learning in a seminal theoretical framework.
Participants will be able to:
- Explain the difference between a word wall and a sound wall.
- Describe the features of consonants.
- Describe the features of vowels.
