Alternatives to Suspensions and Expulsion: Collaborative and Proactive Solutions

Disciplinary exclusions are largely ineffective in reducing problem behaviors. Research has shown that suspensions fail to improve student behavior and school climate. Moreover, students with disabilities and students of color are suspended and expelled at higher rates than their peers. Many school administrators use exclusionary disciplinary measures because they lack alternatives for suspensions and expulsions.
This training session will feature reactive and proactive strategies and alternatives to suspensions and expulsions. The session will focus on the benefits of equitable disciplinary practices using Key Responsibility Areas (KRAs) including: data practices, authentic family engagement, and professional development strategies to support a culturally responsive behavior management system for all learners.
- Discuss a variety of alternatives to suspensions and expulsions
- Describe tools that foster progress towards proactive, equitable disciplinary practices, including but not limited to: Disciplinary Data System Checklist (McIntosh, 2014); Community Mapping (MAEC); and the Culturally Proficient Continuum (Lindsey, Robins & Terrell, 2009)
- Identify eight Key Responsibility Areas (KRA) to address in order to achieve a proactive, responsive approach for disciplinary equity as a means to suppress student disciplinary infractions

Individuals attending this workshop must arrive on time and stay the duration of the workshop in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours.
