Early Numeracy in the Primary Grades
Early Numeracy in the Primary Grades: Quantity and Computation
Session Dates
Thursday January 09, 2020 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM - PaTTAN - WEST
Closed
Understanding and working flexibility with quantities is at the heart of computation. Students must be taught to connect their physical environment with abstract mathematical notation. A strong conceptual knowledge of individual quantities can be leveraged to enhance magnitude and 1:1 correspondence that moves beyond rote memorization. This strong numeracy foundation extends into strategic counting, formal computation, and a strong number sense. The focus of this session will be the content and pedagogy related to understanding individual quantities, magnitude comparison, 1:1 correspondence, and various computation strategies.
Participants will:
- Describe and connect various representations of quantities
- Develop a logical model for teaching early numeracy topics
- Utilize tools that model computation
