Early Numeracy in the Primary Grades: Word Problems for the Early Learner

This session will engage participants to help all students, including students with learning disabilities, make sense of and solve mathematical word problems. Participants will use schema-based instruction to solve addition and subtraction word problems applied to Kindergarten through Grade 2 standards. This explicit way of teaching math scaffolds students through the process of solving word problems by using schematic diagrams.
Objectives
Participants will:
- Engage in schema-based instruction for addition and subtraction, including models and vocabulary while supporting STEM related content
- Model a self-regulation strategy to solve word problems in addition and subtraction.
- Investigate misconceptions in mathematics word problem
- Develop an interactive notebook to support mathematics instruction
Target Audience
Special Educators, Regular Educators, Math Supervisors and Coaches, Supervisors of Curriculum and Instruction.
Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
