2023 Safe and Supportive Learning Environments: Prevention Before the Crisis Summit
11. Preventing and De-Escalating Behavior within the PBIS Framework
Session Dates
Wednesday August 16, 2023 1:30 PM - 2:45 PM - PaTTAN - CENTRAL
Closed
Providing safe, positive, and effective learning environments require staff who are confident in their own competencies for preventing and responding to intense and potentially disruptive behaviors. An effective system for de-escalation is one that is integrated into the essential elements of PBIS, and leverages previously installed Tier 1 practices for encouraging appropriate behavior, teaching self-regulation, responding to disruptive behaviors, and is both trauma informed and equitable. This session will demonstrate how to develop and align these PBIS practices into a simplified logic organizing four-phases of de-escalation. By integrating de-escalation into PBIS, organizations will be more clear in their approach to implement and progress-monitor consistent adult routines to support dysregulated youth.
