2023 Pennsylvania Department of Education (Virtual) Conference
33. When Academic Language is the Barrier
Session Dates
Thursday March 02, 2023 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Webinar
Closed
Academic vocabulary are the words we use in our academic disciplines (e.g., science, history, math, literature). Some terms like “factor” and “environment” are general and used across disciplines, but can mean something different in different contexts. The word “factor” in math references a multiplicative relationship between numbers (e.g., 8 and 3 are factors of 24). In history, “factor” is an issue or event that explains something. Talk about confusing! This session will share research-based practices to help you focus on which words to teach and we’ll talk about how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) takes us further than the typically suggested “multiple modalities.”
Target Audience
General education and special education administrators and teachers, paraprofessionals, school psychologists, professional development staff, and families of students with disabilities are encouraged to attend.
Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate individuals who have special needs as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act and who need assistance at this event. Contact: Debra Jordan, at [(610) 878-7224, or
