31. Intensifying Word Problem Instruction for Students with Mathematics Difficulties
Session Dates

Many schools in the United States serve students with mathematics difficulties who demonstrate challenges in solving word problems through multitiered systems of support (MTSS). Within a prototypical MTSS instructional framework, these students receive core instruction at Tier 1. Students who require more intensive instruction receive supplemental support at Tier 2 or 3, typically in small groups or individually. To successfully address the word problem struggles of students with mathematics difficulties, practitioners must provide specialized instruction at Tiers 2 and 3. Experts have explicitly made recommendations for individualizing instruction for students. For example, the taxonomy of intensive intervention provides guidelines on seven essential areas practitioners must consider for intensifying instruction in MTSS frameworks: strength, dosage, alignment, attention to transfer, comprehensiveness, behavioral support, and individualization. However, this framework does not include advice on the specific intervention characteristics that practitioners must manipulate to individualize instruction to meet students' needs. This knowledge gap is problematic for practitioners because changes to an intervention can impact its effectiveness. This session will increase participants' knowledge of instructional frameworks for providing intensive word problem instruction for students with mathematics difficulties. They will also enhance their understanding of the factors they should consider in planning for intensive word problem instruction.
Target Audience
General education and special education administrators and teachers, paraprofessionals, school psychologists, professional development staff, and families of students with disabilities are encouraged to attend.
