2023 Pennsylvania Department of Education (Virtual) Conference
27. Considering the Alternatives: Specialized Placements and the IDEA
Session Dates
Thursday March 02, 2023 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM - Webinar
Closed
The IDEA places emphasis on inclusion in the general education setting, where possible, for students with disabilities, but what happens when a student requires a more specialized placement? In this session, Atty. Erin D. Gilsbach will examine different types of placements, including behavior and emotional support placements, autistic support classrooms, life skills classrooms, alternative educational environments, partial hospitalization placements, and more. She will discuss least restrictive environment (LRE) legal requirements, identify specific issues that IEP teams should consider when discussing placements outside of the regular education environment, and provide practical tips and guidance for IEP teams when considering specialized educational placements.
Target Audience
General education and special education administrators and teachers, paraprofessionals, school psychologists, professional development staff, and families of students with disabilities are encouraged to attend.
Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate individuals who have special needs as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act and who need assistance at this event. Contact: Debra Jordan, at [(610) 878-7224, or
