61. Stopping the Slide: Building Fluency with Precision Teaching to Make MTSS Systems Really Work
Session Dates

Despite their hard work, educators often find that many students "forget" how to do something they could do days earlier, or that their performance gets worse on longer assignments. Even worse, they find that students cannot quickly and accurately perform the prerequisite skills necessary to thrive in the new objectives being taught. Each of these common problems indicate a lack of fluency, which is primary reason why students end up needing additional levels of support in MTSS systems. To stop the slide of students into Tier 2 and 3 interventions, and to provide highly effective Tier 2 and 3 interventions, fluency is critical. But what exactly is fluency and how do we make it happen? What can teachers do to ensure that their students retain what they've been taught? How can teachers make sure their students have the skills to learn new material in the first place? For over 50 years, Precision Teachers have been using a system of standard measurement and deliberate, meaningful practice routines to help students develop fluency: performances that are automatic, flexible, and lasting. This presentation will describe the concept of fluency, introduce how teachers measure performances using the Standard Celeration Chart, describe why the concepts of frequency and celeration should be a teacher's best friend, and show how teachers develop peer coaching and other practice routines that lead to remarkable academic gains.
