“How are the children? All the children are well.” This is an African Proverb by the Masai community. In Memphis Shelby County Schools, we are focusing efforts to make sure we can answer with confidence. Currently, we are aware that students may face challenges and the response is not that “the children are well.” Many times, when this is the case, it affects the child’s well-being. And this will ultimately disrupt the academic process. If your district is embedding social emotional learning programs, do you wonder if you are on the right track? ReSET is one of the interventions that Memphis Shelby County Schools is implementing in their district. The ReSET room is an identified safe space in the school building where students can go to work on gaining skills that help them with de-escalating, problem solving, and refocusing on appropriate behaviors to avoid classroom or school removal as well as minimize lost instructional time. By utilizing CASEL competencies and best practices for interventions and strategies, the ReSET room is taking flight in Memphis Shelby County Schools. This session can provide school districts across the nation with ideas of what is working with ReSET implementation as we reimagine social and emotional learning practices. Learn how the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district expanded from 30 pilot schools to 127 rooms across the district within a two-year span.
