2023 Pennsylvania Department of Education (In-Person) Conference
12. Bringing Balance: How to Promote Equitable Practices With Families of Students With Disabilities
Session Dates
Wednesday March 01, 2023 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Hershey Lodge and Convention Center
Closed
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) recognizes the importance of the family-professional partnership through numerous regulations and procedures designed to ensure that families are included throughout the educational assessment and planning for their child. Nevertheless, the implementation of family-professional partnership practices is often school-driven, with procedures and practices that tend to exclude, rather than include, families of children with disabilities. This challenge is even further heightened for families who are culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse. This session presents strategies designed to bring balance to this partnership by increasing the equity and inclusion of families of children with disabilities throughout the education process, including culturally responsive strategies aimed at actively including families and students to participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.
Target Audience
General education and special education administrators and teachers, paraprofessionals, school psychologists, professional development staff, and families of students with disabilities are encouraged to attend.
Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate individuals who have special needs as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act and who need assistance at this event. Contact: Debra Jordan at (610) 878-7224 or
