Addressing the Needs of MIDDLE SCHOOL Students Requiring Tier 2 and 3 Services in Mathematics

The percentage of eighth grade students that score at or above the proficient level in mathematics on the National Assessment of Educational Progress continues to be low suggesting the need for an integrated systematic multi-tiered approach to service delivery. Given that mathematics is a multi-faceted topic it is important to identify the critical components of mathematics that will contribute most to success in later mathematics, particularly algebra. A growing body of evidence suggests that attention to foundational skills within key areas of mathematics will be helpful to all children, in particular those at-risk for or with mathematics learning disabilities. This workshop will provide the most recent research evidence on key focus areas in mathematics, instructional and intervention approaches that can be used to address those key areas for struggling students, and describe ways to intensify existing intervention approaches for students needing the most support.
