Oral Language in the Writing Process and the Impact of Handwriting and Spelling

This session will focus on defining Tier 1 writing instruction within a multi-tiered system of support, the importance of oral language and vocabulary to the writing process, and the impact of handwriting and spelling on student writing. After discussing a model for Tier 1 writing instruction, the relationship between oral language and the writing process will be examined. All too often, students are also constrained as writers by difficulties with transcription skills. Participants in this interactive component of the presentation will examine the impact of handwriting and spelling difficulties on cognitive demands in the student writer with attention paid to what needs to be included in effective transcription skill instruction.
