The course is designed as an overview for educators on what Cybersecurity is and how it can be used to engage students. It aims to support educators in utilizing Cybersecurity topics and resources as a tool to engage students in computer science (CS) learning.
Participants will explore resources and strategies for integrating cross-content connections in Cybersecurity for K-8 classrooms. Throughout the course, educators will develop and share a lesson plan using these resources that can be used in their classroom setting.
Objectives
Educators engaged in the course will:
- List four reasons why we should teach Cybersecurity and how it can be used to engage their students.
- Utilize Computer Science (CS) Standards and STEELS standards to identify the standards that are in direct and indirect alignment with Cybersecurity topics for K-8 classrooms.
- Explore and be familiar with age-appropriate educational resources, tools, and curricula available for teaching cybersecurity to K-8 students.
- Develop age-appropriate lessons and activities to teach students about cybersecurity awareness and the importance of safe online behavior.
- Reflect and articulate next steps to advocate for computer science and specifically cybersecurity education in the K-8 environment.
Target Audience
K-8 educators involved with computer science instruction including: General education teachers, content-area teachers, special education teachers, English language learners teachers, librarians, specialists, instructional coaches.
Participants do NOT have to be designated CS or STEM teachers.
