This training will focus on the research evidence related to phonemic awareness to advanced levels for primary students in grades Kindergarten through Second Grade. Participants will be instructed in how to successfully implement direct, explicit, and systematic phonemic awareness instruction into daily classroom practice. Specifically, instructional practices shared will support students’ consistent engagement with manipulating sounds at the word, syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme level. Assessments related to phonemic awareness will also be offered.

Participants will be able to:

  • Define phonemic awareness
  • List the scope and sequence of phonemic awareness skills from least complex to most complex
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the scope and sequence of phonemic awareness skill by matching a skill to an instructional practice
  • Articulate the speech sounds of the English language accurately
  • Demonstrate understanding of multisensory practices by engaging in accurate hand motions aligned to discrete phonemic awareness skills
  • List assessments (universal screeners, diagnostic, formative) that can be used to inform phonemic awareness instruction and intervention
