Behavior Bytes Winter 2021

Would you like to learn more about how effective PBIS and instructional practices can be integrated in teh math classroom in 20 minutes or less? If so, check out this Behavior Byte that addresses how PBIS and effective math instruction complement one another to help every students reach success.

This installment of Behavior Bytes highlights the work of Dr. Tim Knoster. This byte contains an excerpt from Dr. Knoster’s 2019 session entitled Preventive Classroom Management: Positive Behavior Support in the Classroom! You will receive a review of three critical elements designed to improve student academic and behavioral outcomes in the classroom setting. Dr. Tim Knoster is a professor at the McDowell Institute for Teacher Excellence in Positive Behavior Support in the College of Education at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. The McDowell Institute emphasizes the translation of research on multi-tiered systems of support—most specifically, positive behavior intervention and support—into practice in schools. Dr. Knoster has also served as Executive Director of the International Association for Positive Behavior Support since its inception in 2003. Dr. Knoster (or Tim, as he prefers) has been involved with preservice and in-service teacher training for more than 30 years. He has worn many hats throughout his career, including the role of an instructor of undergraduate and graduate courses, a classroom teacher in the public schools, Director of Student Support Services and Special Education, and Principal Investigator as well as Program Evaluator on federal projects focused on classroom and student-centered behavior intervention and support. Dr. Knoster has extensive experience in providing professional development for classroom teachers and has been the recipient of numerous awards for his endeavors in this regard. He has extensively published and provided training for educators and staff from various child-serving systems in the application of positive behavior support in schools and community-based settings. According to Brookes Publishing, “Dr. Knoster has an uncanny ability to help teachers interpret the research literature on behavioral matters in a way that enables them to translate that same research into practical strategies and approaches in their classrooms.
  Dr. Ambra Green, Assistant Professor of Special Education within the College of Education at The University of Texas at Arlington, spoke with Dr. Nikole Hollins-Sims and Mr. Bob Shields regarding the importance of embedding equity into a multi-tiered system of support for behavior. Dr. Green highlights the importance of defining equity and how it impacts students, as well as the challenges in mitigating disproportionality in discipline. Dr. Green also highlights the importance of fidelity and how those strong infrastructures support dismantling systemic barriers.


Kathleen Lynne Lane is a Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research. Dr. Lane’s research interests focus on designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive, integrated, three-tiered (Ci3T) models of prevention to (a) prevent the development of learning and behavior challenges and (b) respond to existing instances, with an emphasis on systematic screening. She is currently President of the Council for Exceptional Children Division for Research (CEC-DR). She is the co-editor of Remedial and Special Education and Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions. Dr. Lane has co-authored 11 books and published over 200 refereed journal articles and 40 book chapters.

Welcome to the first of our Behavior Bytes Summer series videos dedicated to families, educators, community members, and students preparing for the return of school in the Fall of 2020. Today we invited Meg Duffy, a building principal at Sumner Elementary in the Scranton School District. This recorded interview led by PaTTAN East Consultant Donna Halpin highlights ways to keep families informed, supports for faculty, ways to engage community partners, and suggestions for families as they prepare for the upcoming school year. Mrs. Duffy defines what a trauma sensitive school looks like at Sumner Elementary.

Today we invited Brian McGinley. Mr. McGinley is a Licensed Social Worker from the Chester County Intermediate Unit. He currently work in the Training and Consultation dept of CCIU. This recorded 2 part interview lead by PaTTAN EAST consultant, Mrs. Sandy Shacklady-White, highlights how the pandemic may have impacted our youth, defines resiliency and post traumatic growth, and provides strategies for preparing to return to school. Mr. McGinley provide practical information that is applicable in your life.
  Today we talk with Dyane Carrere. Ms. Carrere is an educator with more than 40 years of experience supporting students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs.  She speaks on the topics of behavior and trauma at state and national levels and is the lead author of the book The Re-Set Process: Trauma-Informed Behavior Strategies, due out through Brookes Publishing in October 2020. 
This recorded 2-part interview lead by PaTTAN EAST consultant, Dr. Tina Lawson, highlights how self-regulation is a critical skill when dealing with stress and stressful situations. This skill is not necessarily mastered by all of us in all situations. COVID-19 has stretched many of us as caregivers, employers/employees and family members. If we struggle with self-regulation as adults, just imagine how our children and youth are dealing with the stress. This 2-part series gives practical strategies anyone can master and teach to others.
     Join Chelsea Melrath, Coalition Coordinator & Trauma Specialist from Chester County Government Services as she describes what the ACEs study is and its findings.  She discusses, how our bodies respond to situations that evoke stress, the 3 types of stress and how stress relates to trauma.  She explains the 4 levels of being ‘trauma informed’.  Additionally, she shares strategies that adults can implement with children and youth at this challenging time. Lastly, she provides a list of resources for viewers to access for extra supports.
