Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents. Students return to school following TBI with unique and varied needs due to the sudden impact of the injury on the developing brain. Often the full effects of TBI are not realized for several years as the brain continues to mature over time. TBI was added to special education law in 1990, as a disability group requiring specialized educational understanding. TBIs can occur any point in a student’s life ( although not prior to or during birth ), and are always caused by an external force from any of the following:

  • Falls

  • Assault

  • Child Abuse

  • Domestic Violence

  • Motor Vehicle Accidents

  • Pedestrian Accidents

  • Gunshot Wounds

  • Sports and Recreational Activities

  • Abusive Head Trauma (Shaken Baby Syndrome)
