This training will be presented in a series of four one hour conference calls over the lunch hour. Participants will be provided with a dial in number and pass code, have access to online handout materials, and the opportunity to email questions to the presenter during each of the four sessions.
They will learn about:
- new and emerging research supporting the early use of ASL, fingerspelling, and other forms of visual communication,
- how to meet the needs of children with both hearing loss and visual concerns and other complex needs.
- impact of the hearing loss diagnosis on the family and information on the benefit of parent support and interaction with deaf/Deaf adults.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Analyze prevailing attitudes toward American Sign Language (ASL) and challenge existing myths about sign language in general.
- Discover emerging research related to visual language and visual communication in deaf and hard of hearing children including those likely to eventually use technology, listening, and spoken language.
- List information about addressing hearing loss in children with complex needs.
- Define strategies to address vision concerns in children with deafness and hearing loss.
- Develop an awareness of: family impact of a hearing loss from diagnosis to acceptance; value of family support; and importance of interaction with deaf/Deaf adults.
Target Audience
This training is intended for early intervention service coordinators who support infants and toddlers with hearing loss, combined vision and hearing loss, or hearing loss and complex needs.
