This Embedded Instruction for Early Learning course focuses on identifying the target skills we want children to learn, in order to increase their meaningful engagement with people and materials during daily routines and activities. To help preschool Early Intervention professionals in Pennsylvania implement Embedded Instruction for Early Learning, this course teaches the process used to identify target skills. The process includes identifying sources of information that can be used to develop target skills, breaking down annual IEP goals, and writing high-quality targets for children to learn and practice across routines. Finally, this course will support Early Intervention professionals in collaborating with Early Childhood Education professionals in writing target skills that are observable, measurable, proximal, and aligned to PA Early Learning Standards and curricular goals.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and align target skills for embedded instruction with IEP goals and the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards.
  2. Define OMPA (Observable, Measurable, Proximal, & Aligned) features of high-quality target skills for embedded instruction.
  3. Describe how embedding instruction on target skills can help children to make progress toward their annual IEP goal.
  4. Apply Embedded Instruction, What and When to Teach techniques within Early Intervention sessions.
