Through this presentation, Dr. Hopper defines incidental learning and where it is infused in social learning, identifies the broader implications for student who are deaf, and inquires about the role of sign language interpreters in incidental learning discourse within the Deaf student’s situated contexts. Participants will also learn to distinguish the differences between formal, informal, and incidental learning practices, as well as have opportunities for discussion with peers and application activities.

Objectives

  • Differentiate between formal, informal, and incidental learning;
  • Identify various roles of conversations.
  • Describe the Access-Participation theory.
  • Identify possible strategies to incorporate in interpreting practices, so students who are Deaf and hard of hearing have more access to incidental learning opportunities.

Target Audience

Pennsylvania Educational Interpreters working in the K-12 setting
Pennsylvania Teachers of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and are fluent in American Sign Language
