Youth mental health first aid is an introductory training designed to teach school staff the early-warning signs and symptoms of possible mental health issues of youth ages 12-18. This presentation will share with participants the basic tenets of youth mental health and how it relates to the students in correctional facilities.

Objectives

  • Identify the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems encountered by staff working with youth in correctional facilities, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, substance use disorders, psychosis and psychotic disorders, and self-injury.
  • List a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional help within the correctional system.
  • Identify the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities.
  • Define the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery.

Target Audience

This training is only open to correctional school-based staff.

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
