Special education laws and regulations ensure that parents are given opportunities to participate meaningfully in their child’s special education experiences. The NOREP/PWN: Lessons Learned in the Field webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of the legal requirements and implications of the NOREP/PWN, as well as how legal concerns may transpire when parents are not provided their procedural rights from the perspective of a hearing officer.

Computer science (CS) and data science are closely related fields. Data science, represented by the concept "data and analysis" is one of five key concepts in K-12 computer science (CS) education. Andrew Kromer shares about his experiences with data science and CS, and ideas for broadening participation in K-12 CS.

The participants will be provided information on the on-line training resource The Open Hands Open Access (OHOA) Intervener Learning Modules which are a national resource related to the intervention for students who are deaf-blind and are being served in educational settings, and how the Pennsylvania Deaf-Blind Project is supporting this learning resource for module participants across the Commonwealth. During this one-hour webinar learn about PaTTAN’s upcoming OHOA Module training, training schedule and its “kick off”. Meet the staff of the Pennsylvania Deaf-Blind Project and your module co-hosts. The primary purpose of the modules was to provide a resource for the acquisition of specialized skills for paraeducators working with students with deaf-blindness functioning in the role of the intervener. An intervener provides a bridge to the world for the student who is deafblind. The intervener helps the student gather information, learn concepts and skills, develop communication and language, and establish relationships that lead to greater independence. The intervener is a support person who does with, not for the student. The module content was created by a diverse group of experts in the field of deaf-blindness including state and national deaf-blind project staff, parents of children who are deaf-blind, higher education faculty,teachers, educational interpreters, and interveners.

A previous episode of PaTTANpod explores cultural navigation, a model for providing linguistically and culturally relevant support to English Learners and their families. Operationalizing cultural navigation requires collaboration among multiple LEA and community partners. Erin Conahan, Mark Simms, and Loice Byler join PaTTANpod to discuss how school and district leaders play a crucial role in the implementation of cultural navigation in the School District of Lancaster.

Dr. Miles explains how she overhauled the fieldwork requirement of the early literacy graduate and undergraduate courses that she teaches and/or oversees in fall 2020 in order to improve preservice teacher training and foundational skills of striving 1st and 2nd graders from historically underserved schools in NYC DOE. Dr. Miles will explain the research and evidence-based early intervention programs and the implementation approach CUNY Reading Corps has used to scale this initiative to 650 preservice teachers and over 1,200 students served last year, and even more ambitious goals set for this academic year.

The Educational Resources for Children with Hearing Loss (ERCHL) committee has partnered with PaTTAN to develop brief informational videos with accompanying resources on the following topics: the need for services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; teaching strategies; the use of a Section 504 Plan or an IEP; secondary transition and educational interpreters.

This first session in the A Closer Look at Access webinar series is meant to build the foundation before jumping into our Closer Look at Access webinar series. This webinar’s focus will include definitions, explanations, and specific discussion of the types of access currently available for use with augmentative communication devices and for other Assistive Technology devices (e.g., computers, iPad, Smartboard). It will include the “standard and traditional” history of access techniques as well as assessment issues that need to be considered with each individual student when supporting her/his use of assistive technology.

Kathleen Lynne Lane is a Roy A Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research. Dr. Lane's research interests focus on designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive, integrated, three-tiered (Ci3T) models of prevention to (a) prevent the development of learning and behavior challenges and (b) respond to existing instances, with an emphasis on systematic screening. advantages and disadvantages of each to support schools in adopting a behavior screener. At the end of this training, participants will be able to: Define the purpose of utilizing a Universal Behavior Screener in a 3 Tiered Model of Support. List a minimum of 3 Universal Behavior Screeners. Identify the Advantages of 3 Behavior Screeners. Identify the disadvantages of 3 Behavior Screeners.
