Using the SHAPE CODING System to Teach Grammar to School-Aged Children with Language Disorders

This course is suitable for those with limited or no knowledge of the SHAPE CODINGTM system. The course teaches attendees the basics of the SHAPE CODINGTM system and how to use it with children with language disorders. It includes videos of SLTs using the system with a variety of children and practical workshops (bring coloured pencils!) to improve understanding of the system.

During the workshop,participants will learn about the:
-basic colours (for parts of speech)
-shapes (for phrases)
-arrow system (for verb morphology such as tenses)
-evidence base for the SHAPE CODINGTM system and which children benefit

Objectives:
Attendees will learn how to use the SHAPE CODINGTM system to help teach:
- Basic sentence structures
- Vocabulary and linking this with grammar
- Narrative and linking this with grammar
- Subject-verb agreement (e.g., use of ‘is’ vs. ‘are’)
- Verb tenses

Target Audience:
Speech and language pathologists

Individuals attending this workshop must arrive on time and stay the duration of the workshop in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours.
