BrainSTEPS: Understanding TBI from the Inside Out - A Neuroimaging Perspective for Educators

Many children who sustain a TBI will undergo some form of neuroimaging as part of an initial emergency department injury assessment protocol. Of these children, those with a moderate or severe TBI will likely receive additional diagnostic neuroimaging as part of a surgical or rehabilitative treatment plan. The use of neuroimaging as an instructional tool is not typical of most educator workshops on TBI, however, examining TBI from a neuroradiological perspective can add new insight into the neurological and educational consequences of TBI. A neuroimaging instructional approach to understanding TBI can help educationally-based multidisciplinary teams as they develop school-based interventions for children who return to school with a TBI. This workshop will present information on injury biomechanics and neurological outcomes of mild, moderate, and severe TBI from a neuroradiological perspective. It will include relevant neuroimages, case studies, and implications for intervention development.
The last part of the training will focus on providing information on two resources for students with brain injuries in PA: OVR´s WIOA program and the Brain Injury Association of PA’s Juvenile Justice Program.
- Differentiate between mild, moderate, and severe TBI
- Identify different advanced neuroimaging acquisition techniques
- Recognize common structural brain injuries on neuroimages
- List the three stages of recovery following moderate/severe TBI
- Explain how to use two BIAPA programs as additional resources for BrainSTEPS students: OVR´s WIOA and the Juvenile Justice Project

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
