The transition from high school to college is a challenge for many students. For students on the autism spectrum, the transition to a college environment with vastly different expectations, structures, and level of supports presents challenges that require a set of skills and experiences that may be underdeveloped. These differences, in addition to the unique set of strengths and needs of students with autism, require high schools to think about transition planning in different ways. Through our partnership with Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), Bureau of Special Education (BSE), Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), Project AACHIEVE (An Autism College High School Integration for Education and Vocational Excellence) provides a multiple-source perspective on transition planning that takes into account the strengths and needs of neurodiverse individuals. This session will provide school teams and parents with information about the differences between high school and college, and how these differences should impact transition planning for students on the autism spectrum. The goals and activities of Project AACHIEVE, as well as how schools, parents, and students can participate in the project will also be discussed.
