Improving Oral Language Skills in the General Education Setting Using Interprofessional Practice

Interprofessional practice (IPP) is a structure that encourages various professionals to systematically train, plan and collaborate to provide quality services. This session will provide a general overview of IPP and discuss the core competences that are foundational to IPP as well as collaboration models.

Specific assessment, data collection and treatment strategies for improving oral language skills for students with and without an IEP will be discussed. A variety of web resources will be provided.

Sample strategies and activities for RTI will be provided and participants will work in small teams to create other sample activities for the three levels of intervention to address various aspects of oral language.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of Interprofessional practice to improve student’s oral language skills.
  • Describe seven different classroom collaboration models and when each may be appropriate.
  • Create goals and activities to improve oral language skills within the general education classroom.
  • Describe the differences between the 3 tiers of instruction in RTI, and develop activities for each level.
  • Understand and apply various data collection and assessment strategies for intervention within the framework of RTI
