This course addressing the importance of cultivating environments that support touch for connecting and learning begins with our own awareness of our relationship to touch. From there, it then branches out to include our understanding of the way others experience touch. It is important to remember that touch is a way to build supporting and trusting relationships as well as an access point to the world. Understanding these concepts will result in trusted connections built with others and increased access to knowledge and experiences in all areas of life.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Review the varying cultural, personal, and physical boundaries that affect other people´s relationship with touch.
  • Explain the importance of touch as an access point for students who are deaf-blind and how to implement it in all environments for the student.
  • Identify the spectrum of touch support needs and how to provide the appropriate amount of touch support to students on an individual basis.

Target Audience

Teams and Individuals working with and/or interested in professional development regarding students who are deaf-blind, such as parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and other service providers, including those who are not seeking to become interveners.
