Content of this training will focus on developing consultative competencies relevant to the application of Applied Behavior Analysis in school programs providing educational support for students with autism. Critical subjects that will be reviewed in detail including methods for assisting instructional teams in teaching functional life skills relevant to independent living, employment, and leisure activities. Methods to instruct and monitor language programs important for day-to-day activities will be modeled and described.

Additionally, course content will include a review of advanced concepts related to an analysis of verbal behavior. Discussion of the role of syntax and the functional control of language will include a review of arguments related to Chomsky’s review of the 1957 Skinner book, Verbal Behavior. This training will also highlight guided discussion of case studies from work accomplished in Pennsylvania classrooms supported by PaTTAN’s Autism Initiative ABA Supports.



Objectives

 

  1. Participants will discuss assessment processes related to instructional of functional skills.
  2. Participants will state the steps in teaching mands across a variety of locations and motivators relative to life skills and employment opportunities.
  3. Participants will list components for establishing both speaker and listener roless.
  4. Participants will compare and contrast the key aspects of a structural versus a functional approach to the analysis of language. This will include stating how such concepts are important in guiding language interventions for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Target Audience

Consultants and teachers providing behavior analytic consultative services in public school autism programs. The specific audience will be consultants with the PATTAN Autism Initiative ABA Supports and Internal Coaches serving sites participating in the PATTAN AI ABA Supports.
