This session will focus on lesson planning that results in universal instruction for diverse learners in Tier 1 and the development and integration of instruction in Tiers 2 and 3. Every academic task has an academic component (e.g., skill, standard), a behavior component (e.g., student engagement) and a social-emotional component (e.g., how to manage the learning). The process of lesson study addresses how all educators involved with instruction come together to plan instruction to ensure high quality, evidence-based practices are used and all instruction is aligned with state-approved, grade-level (or subject area) standards. In order for students to demonstrate grade-level standards AND take ownership for their learning, the planning process must address academic, behavior and social-emotional factors. A case study process will be used.

Participants will:

  1. Differentiate academic, behavior and social-emotional components of the teaching/learning process.
  2. Identify the steps in the lesson design process.
  3. Describe the characteristics of instruction in Tiers 1, 2 and 3 (including specially designed instruction.
  4. Demonstrate how to “unpack” standards to identify access skills, student engagement requirements and social-emotional factors to ensure a positive learning climate.
  5. Identify behavior support practices that teachers can integrate into instruction to maximize student engagement.
  6. Use the knowledge and skills learned from objectives 1-5 in a case study.
