Word Generation: Enhancing Middle School Literacy

Word Generation is a program designed to teach academic vocabulary daily, discourse and debate skills and writing skills across the core content areas. As a result of Word Generation students enhance their academic language and vocabulary skills, debating skills and persuasive and argumentative writing skills. Word Generation is aligned to the standards and is unique in its cross-disciplinary design, giving teachers of ELA, science, social studies, and math the chance to collaborate on the shared goal of helping students use academic language to articulate their thinking.
Participants will learn how gaps in vocabulary in middle school students, particularly for English language learners and low-income students, interfere with comprehension of content area texts and be introduced to the Word Generation curriculum. Participants will learn how collaborative and coordinated efforts by interdisciplinary middle school teams can ameliorate vocabulary and language gaps for students by engaging in Word Generation.
Participants will be able to:
- Explain how to provide students with repeated exposure to high-frequency academic words across disciplines
- Implement an evidence-based tool (Word Generation) to support all content area teachers with delivery of effective vocabulary instruction
- List ways to engage students in discussion activities and discourse with peers that enable a robust debate on the weekly topic
- Explain how students will enhance writing skills by engaging in weekly persuasive and argumentative writing based on the weekly topic
Middle school teams, represented by ELA, Science, Social Studies and Math Teachers.
Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
