This training will introduce teachers of students with visual impairments to I-M-ABLE. This approach is designed for children who are not making progress in braille reading, particularly those with additional cognitive impairments, as well as deaf-blind.

Each component of the I-M-ABLE approach will be described and modeled. These components include getting started with literacy instruction in braille, selecting key vocabulary words or phrases, teaching tactile perception and tracking skills, teaching writing, teaching phonics and letter recognition and contractions, writing and reading stories, and expanding children’s language development. Participants will be provided hands-on teaching and learning experiences with the braille code utilizing the various components of the I-M-ABLE. Participants will apply the I-M-ABLE approach to create materials for each component, such as demonstrating how to read (tactilely) vocabulary words and developing a short story.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the principles upon which I-M-ABLE is based
  • Select and teach core vocabulary to provide literacy instruction in braille
