Alternate Eligible Content for Writing: Getting Familiar and Going Deeper

Session Dates

Tuesday December 19, 2017 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Closed

This session will provide multiple opportunities to explore and discuss the new Alternate Eligible Content (AEC) for Writing. Participants will become familiar with the Writing AEC across and within grades. Using the process of essentialization, which takes knowledge of individual students into consideration, participants will examine and develop learning targets at various levels of complexity. The session will include an overview of writing tools, including alternative options for students who may not be able to use pens, pencils, and standard keyboards. A variety of resources will be provided for participants to further explore writing tools and materials, instruction, and Alternate Eligible Content.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Identify the Writing Alternate Eligible Content within and across grades
  • Use essentialization examples to identify differentiated learning targets for students of varying abilities
  • Compare alternate writing tools for students for whom typical writing tools (e.g. pens, pencils, keyboard) may present a barrier
  • Identify resources to learn more about embedding writing in standards-aligned instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities
