This session will engage participants to help all students to develop algebraic thinking skills in young students. Participants will examine how establishing number sense and application of mathematical properties in the early grades relates to algebraic concepts they will encounter throughout mathematics and leading up to algebra.

 

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Make connections between early number sense and algebraic concepts
  • Apply properties of mathematics to early mathematics algorithms and make connections to their applications in algebra
  • Investigate techniques for improving students’ use of mental strategies in mathematics

 

Target Audience

Special Educators, Regular Educators, Math Supervisors and Coaches, Supervisors of Curriculum and Instruction.

 

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
