This workshop will prepare Early Intervention staff/early childhood specialists to meet state, curricular and national goals for supporting dual language learners by presenting research-based strategies, links to key resources, and new approaches to family engagement. The workshop will provide a balance of information, active participation, and small group discussion/consultation to provide a customized learning experience for participants.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- State policies and current research that guide best practices for teaching and caring for young children who are linguistically and culturally diverse.
- Identify ways to support multilingual families as their child’s first teachers.
- Define first and second language development
- Deconstruct the complex interactions of cultural and language learning in their own work
- Develop a plan to make changes in their practice based on current information related to multilingual children and their families
Target Audience
Infant/Toddler and Preschool Early Intervention Staff/Early Childhood Staff
Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
