Bringing Life to Books to Facilitate Early Language and Literacy Development

The training program will focus on the development and use of experience books to facilitate early language and literacy development of infants, toddlers, and preschool age children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Evidence-based literacy practices, recent research pointing to the benefits of early print exposure for children’s future linguistic development, and critical period effects will also be examined. This training will include video examples and time for creative construction of experience books.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Describe major milestones of early literacy acquisition from birth to 5
- Identify potential gaps in language and literacy progress for children who are D/HH
- Identify influencing factors, mediators and moderators of language/literacy outcomes
- Discuss evidence-based practices: recent research pointing to the benefits of early print exposure for children’s future linguistic development, building on a long history of research on critical period effects.
- Describe experience books by identifying types, features, and common experiences or routines.
- Identify considerations for effective implementation and use of experience books.
- Discuss strategies for engaging multiple caregivers and involving extended family members.
Target Audience
This training is intended for Early Intervention service coordinators, providers, teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, teachers of the visually impaired, early childhood education teachers, speech & language therapists, audiologists, special health care needs consultants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and parents of infants and young children who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or at risk for deaf-blindness.
Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
