Effective Core Writing Instruction: The Writing Process -Macro-Level Grades 3-12

In this workshop participants will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to improve macro-level writing skills for students in grades 3-12. Instructional practices for tier 1 (whole class) instruction within a multi-tiered system of support will be discussed. Topics include how to schedule time for writing instruction, optimize the relationship between language and the writing process, explicitly teach the writing process, and expand the writing process to discipline-specific writing. As part of this workshop, participants will develop a comprehensive action plan to guide implementation of effective, research-based writing instruction.
This workshop continues the examination of effective macro-level writing practices for the core. Topics include how to explicitly teach students to respond to text by writing (e.g., note taking, summarizing, question answering) and apply the writing process to discipline-specific writing projects (e.g., narrative, informational, and opinion/argumentative writing). Developing dynamic writing instruction and student engagement will also be discussed with a focus on the use of inquiry-based activities, collaborative writing opportunities, use of project goal setting, and on-going feedback. As part of this workshop, participants will continue their development of a comprehensive action plan to guide implementation of effective, research-based writing instruction.
Participants will be able to:
- Schedule writing instruction effectively within literacy instruction and across content areas.
- Identify the components of the writing process
- Use explicit instruction to teach all components of the writing process
- Apply the writing process to genre-specific writing instruction

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
