Supporting Students in Reading Growth and Achievement

The ability to proficiently read, whether it be fiction or non-fiction text, is the gateway to future success in a student’s chosen post-secondary pathway. This session will provide background information on both the importance of direct and explicit instruction in the area of reading (ELA: English Language Arts), the challenges faced by students at-risk for reading proficiency and, most importantly, will provide an overview on how instruction may be tailored to meet the needs of students during their AEDY placement. Discussion around grade level PA Core Standards and the scaffolding and the differentiation required for many students will be emphasized.
At the end of this training school district leaders and AEDY Program Administrators will know and be able to:
- Explain the importance of reading instruction as it relates to all students
- Discuss the meaning of direct and explicit instruction as it relates to AEDY programming.
- Describe approaches to teaching to grade level standards while also addressing scaffolding and differentiation strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
- Identify key resources to support them in their efforts
