The Syntax Intensive course asks participants to explore sentences for both reading and writing. The hands-on, interactive style facilitates a rich discussion about syntax – both why it matters and how best to teach it. Participants begin with a definition of syntax and how it differs from grammar. They explore powerful sentence frames for younger students. Then, they consider the function of words in sentences and how that impacts student comprehension at the sentence level. They explore sentence-building activities, including expanding, combining, and creating sentences. They learn about clauses as the building blocks of all sentences, considering their role in writing and comprehending. They study sentence types and apply that knowledge to an examination of the components of a sentence-level lesson. Participants interact and practice with all introduced concepts and leave with strategies they can implement with their students after each session.

  • Create sentence frames for young and struggling writers.
