This workshop includes foundational vocabulary instruction and covers best practice for middle/high school students. A significant amount of time is given over to work with morphology, with emphasis on Latin-based and Greek-based words common in middle and high school texts. Participants will learn morphology-based word attack skills and have multiple opportunities to apply them to authentic word analysis. They will examine components of effective morphology instruction, practice with effective activities to aid in morphological understanding, and discuss how best to integrate instruction with other content material.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- describe best practices in vocabulary instruction.
- explain how morphology impacts vocabulary instruction.
- explain word sense and how to develop that sense in students.
- list ways to integrate vocabulary instruction into their teaching.
