This session will overview The Third Quest, a teacher-directed reading intervention for middle and high school students (grades 5 through adult). Participants will learn how this program addresses research-based strategies for adolescent low readers in the area of vocabulary, word study, comprehension, content knowledge, and fluency. Learn how active student engagement combined with informational and narrative fiction, a focus on traits for employability, and study skills result in high success and generalizability to general education classes.

Objectives

  1. Describe how low literacy affects adult lives.
  2. Name and describe five important components of remediation for adolescent low readers.
  3. Diagnose and suggest strategies for improving reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
  4. Identify variables important for improving reading when using The Third Quest (or any intensive reading intervention).

Target Audience

Secondary teams participating in various MTSS Series Cohort trainings to include:
Building Principal, General Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher, School Psychologist, Speech/Language Therapist, Reading Specialist, ESL Teacher, School Counselor, Academic/Instructional and PBIS Coach, Family/Parent Representative, IU Consultant Support (Academic and Behavioral Expertise), MTSS Coordinator
