This session will engage participants to help all students, including students with learning disabilities, make sense of and solve mathematical word problems. Participants will use schema-based instruction to solve addition and subtraction word problems applied to Kindergarten through Grade 2 standards. This explicit way of teaching math scaffolds students through the process of solving word problems by using schematic diagrams.

 

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Engage in schema-based instruction for addition and subtraction, including models and vocabulary while supporting STEM related content
  • Model a self-regulation strategy to solve word problems in addition and subtraction.
  • Investigate misconceptions in mathematics word problem
  • Develop an interactive notebook to support mathematics instruction
