This session deepens the exploration of distance consultation during COVID-19 with case studies of practitioners who suddenly were forced into a distance consultation model. The content within PSU’s emerging model was applied by graduate students under the supervision of COMS mentors.

Speakers' biographies: Amy Parker, EdD, COMS, is an assistant professor and the coordinator of the Orientation and Mobility Program in the Special Education Department at Portland State University. She is also the immediate past President of the Division of Visual Impairment and Deafblindness within the CEC. In 2009 she completed her doctorate in special education, with an emphasis in deafblindness and a certification in orientation and mobility, through a leadership and enrichment fellowship funded by the Office of Special Education. Using participatory methodologies with community stakeholders, she has worked to design accessible multimedia learning modules for national technical assistance and personnel preparation. Her research interests include orientation and mobility for individuals with complex disabilities, communication interventions, participatory action research with people with disabilities and their families, and community-based partnerships to create social change.

Katherine Ericson, M.Ed. & TSVI, is a recent graduate of Portland State University’s Orientation and Mobility (O&M) program. She currently lives in Greater Tokyo, Japan, where she serves military-connected students with visual impairments. She is also the current Secretary of AERBVI’s International Services and Global Issues Division. Since moving to Japan, she has enjoyed learning from her Japanese counterparts to create more culturally-responsive pedagogy. Her research interests include the use of distance consultation for students with visual impairments, adapted sport, and the intersection of geography and O&M.
