This session will discuss common misperceptions many educators have about TBI, such as “Having a student with TBI-related short-term or long-term memory deficits write down assignments in a daily planner notebook is a good strategy to help them remember their assignments” and “When planning educational interventions for children who have sustained a TBI, it is best to use standardized tests (e.g., WJ cog, WISC-V, SB-V, WMS) that measure cognitive functions (e.g., memory, attention, executive function)”.

Speakers’ Bio: 
Dr. Paul Jantz began his career in education as a public school teacher. He earned his M.A. degree in school counseling and his Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. He is currently a full-time faculty member in the school psychology program at Texas State University where he teaches about brain anatomy, the biological basis of behavior, data-based decision-making, and ethics. Prior to beginning his career at the university level, Dr. Jantz was a practicing school psychologist for 15 years. Dr. Jantz’s research and professional interests include the role of neuroimaging in the school-based assessment of children with traumatic brain injury (TBI), increasing educators’ sense of self-efficacy as it relates to TBI, assessing the use of evidence-based academic, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions for children with TBI, and barriers that prevent individuals from seeking a medical evaluation following a mild, moderate, and severe TBIs. Dr. Jantz has published a number of practitioner-focused articles and case studies on TBI in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored the book Working with TBI in Schools: Transition, Assessment, and Intervention.  Dr. Jantz has presented skills-building workshops on TBI at the local, state, and national levels. Dr. Jantz a 2018-2019 recipient of a 10-month U.S. State Department Fulbright Core Scholar grant.
